Summer of Service Recap: How Our Volunteer Team Grew This Summer
This summer, StreetWise Georgia asked our community to do something simple but powerful: bring someone with you.
That was the heart of S.O.S., our Summer of Service campaign. One challenge, open to every volunteer already in our building: invite a friend, a family member, a coworker, or a neighbor to join the mission alongside you. No experience required. Just a willingness to show up for a neighbor in need.
Now that summer is winding down, we're taking a moment to look back at what our StreetWise community built together.
Why We Needed All Hands-on Deck This Summer
StreetWise Georgia runs on a staff of just seven people. Every month, that small team and a much larger group of volunteers work together to serve thousands of families, distribute hundreds of thousands of pounds of food, and walk alongside our neighbors as they move toward stability.
The math only works because of volunteers. In a typical month, around 750 people give their time to StreetWise, and last year alone they logged more than 39,000 hours of service. On any given weekday, it takes 30 to 50 volunteers just to keep our distributions running.
Summer is when that need often stretches thinnest, with families traveling, schedules shifting, and the community need growing. That's exactly why we launched S.O.S. when we did: to keep the momentum strong through the season and set us up well for the busy fall ahead.
The Challenge, By the Numbers
Here's what the Summer of Service campaign looked like in action:
23 new volunteers recruited through the S.O.S. challenge
12,426 total volunteer hours contributed over the summer
2,588 families and individuals served during the campaign window
5 existing volunteers who brought a friend, coworker, or family member to serve alongside them
More Than Moving Boxes
Ask most people what volunteering at a food pantry looks like, and they'll picture sorting cans or loading trunks. That work matters. But spend a day at StreetWise and you'll see the real heart of it happens in the conversations. It's the Greeter putting a nervous first-time guest at ease. It's a Client Advisor listening to a family's story and reminding them they're not alone. It's a small word of encouragement offered in passing.
Food brings people through our doors. Relationships are what keep hope alive once they're inside.
That's what made the S.O.S. campaign about more than filling volunteer shifts. Every new person who joined this summer became part of that same work of dignity and connection, not just an extra set of hands.
What This Means Heading Into Fall
Every person who said yes to the Summer of Service challenge helps StreetWise Georgia meet a need that doesn't take a season off. As we move into fall programming, including Hunger Action Month and our Thanksgiving Mobile Food Pantry, that growing volunteer base is exactly what allows us to serve more local families with the same dignity and care.
