The Heart of StreetWise: Why Our Army Is About More Than Numbers

Every month, hundreds of people walk through the doors of StreetWise ready to serve. Here's why their impact goes far beyond the hours they give.

The Math Behind the Mission

At StreetWise, we operate with a dedicated staff of just six people. Yet every month, we serve thousands of families, distribute hundreds of thousands of pounds of food, and provide resources that help our neighbors move toward stability. 

How is that possible? The answer is simple: volunteers. 

Each month, approximately 750 volunteers help power the mission. Last year alone, they contributed more than 39,000 hours of service. On any given weekday, we rely on 30 to 50 volunteers to help keep distributions running smoothly. 

Without them, the math simply doesn't add up. 

More Than Moving Boxes

When people think about volunteering at a food pantry, they often picture sorting food or loading cars. Those things matter. But if you spend a day at StreetWise, you'll quickly discover that the most important work isn't happening in the warehouse. It's happening in the conversations. It's the greeter who welcomes a nervous first-time guest with a smile. It's the Client Advisor who listens to a family's story and reminds them they aren't alone. It's the volunteer who takes an extra moment to offer encouragement, prayer, or simply a kind word. Food may bring people through our doors, but relationships are what keep hope alive. 

A Day to Say Thank You

Last month, we had the privilege of celebrating the people who make this mission possible during our Volunteer Appreciation Event. The afternoon was filled with laughter, fellowship, games, prizes, and a taco bar prepared by Kamille Carter, owner of Just Like Gran's Catering. 

Kamille's story is especially meaningful to the StreetWise family. She first came to StreetWise as a client and has since become a volunteer while growing her own business. Her journey is a powerful reminder that hope has a way of multiplying. 

During the event, volunteers also received commemorative Tracy Joseph pins as a small token of appreciation for their dedication and service. The pins served as a reminder that Tracy's legacy continues through every person who chooses to show up and serve. 

The S.O.S. Call

During the celebration, we also launched our internal S.O.S. campaign—Summer of Service. The challenge is simple: invite someone else to join the mission. 

A friend. A family member. A coworker. A neighbor. 

As the needs of our community continue to grow, so does our need for volunteers who are willing to step up and help. Whether someone can give four hours a month or four hours a week, there is a place for them at StreetWise.

But because they consistently show up when their neighbors need them most. Every volunteer helps create hope, restore dignity, and remind families that they are seen, valued, and loved.
